Ji-kabuki is local form of the kabuki theater that was established during Japan’s Edo period. Gifu is home to the largest ji-kabuki community in Japan with 29
active preservation groups and eight historic shibai-goya (playhouses) in the area.
Performances held in places around Gifu Prefecture have inherited the stories, choreographies,
and costumes of the Edo period. In these playhouses, you can experience shows like they did at the time.
